Christmas came early this year…

“Say, have I told you about the first time I went out on a submarine? You see, I fell through a hatch. It took some hide off my leg but it didn’t hurt too much. The main reason it did hurt was that I fell on an officer. He was a good sport about it. He even let me go over to sickbay every day to visit him. He is getting along fine!”

And a few short months later, that same recruit ended up receiving the American Spirit of Honor medal…

Ya’ll, Christmas came early this year, and it came in the form of letters. Hundreds of letters my dad wrote to my mom during his time in the Navy (Jan 1957 – Feb 1961), and they are amazing and funny, and pretty much my new favorite thing(s).
I can’t stop reading them…
I knew my dad was a great storyteller.
I didn’t know he was an amazing writer or that his penmanship was so pretty…

There is So much good stuff in these letters, ya’ll. I”m not exactly sure what, if anything, to do with all of them…

I have started reading them to my mom. She laughs, and cries, and sometimes fills in the blanks, and laughs some more.

What I am most aware of is that we both miss him.
